Deuteronomy 21 – 25
Following God to His standard is impossible. Even if you managed to live without breaking the ten commandments in anyway there are all these little laws regarding every area of your life. There is hardly a way to know them all, remember them all and obey them all at the same time.
At the same time, most of these laws are common sense like not yoking an ox and a donkey together. Others we may be totally at a loss as to how to follow them or are we breaking them every day of our lives without knowing it such as women not wearing men’s clothing. Does this mean whatever is considered appropriate for only men at the time should not be worn by women? It also includes the reverse rule, men are not to wear women’s clothing and the same question still stands. I honestly don’t know the answer to that. Am I going to stop wearing jeans anytime soon? No probably not, but the jeans I wear are culturally considered feminine so maybe they don’t count. Men wear pink for breast cancer awareness and a number of other reasons, but they wear it in men’s style clothing, so is that acceptable? Again I don’t really know. I also don’t think that that is exactly the point.
The point is that God’s standard is the highest standard. Man could not think to set it so high and humanity can never hope to live within the entire boundary of the law. Without God’s mercy, we are all lost for eternity. Think about all the ways you are violating these laws aside from the ten commandments today? How far from the standard do you fall?
God says that the penalty for sin is death. We are not to tolerate its presence among us. In Israel, just for being a rebellious son you would be stoned to death. Without sacrifice as an atonement for wrongdoing, the entire nation would soon have been wiped out. What an incredible God we have that He provided a way for redemption knowing full well how badly we would fail the standard again and again and again!
