Numbers 6 – 10

“Whenever the ark set out, Moses said, ‘Rise up, O LORD! May your enemies be scattered; may your foes flee before you.’ Whenever it came to rest, he said, ‘Return O LORD, to the countless thousands of Israel.”‘

Numbers 10:35-36

The Israelites in this generation have never been outside of Egypt. They have no idea where they are going or what it is going to be like. This is so much like everything in our lives: where should we live, where should we work, where should we go to church, etc… There are all these questions about the path we are supposed to follow. For the Israelites it was a little more obvious, God went before them in a cloud by day and a pillar of fire at night. When He stopped, they stopped. When He set out, they set out. All they had to do was have faith enough to follow Him! In many ways, it is just that simple for you and I. Instead of having Moses, Aaron, and the priests talking to God for us we can go to God personally for direction. He has placed His Holy Spirit inside all those who have surrendered their lives to Him. All we have to do is listen and have the faith to follow.

In these chapters, God commands them to celebrate The Passover feast before they set out from Mount Sinai. There are a few people who are unclean because of a dead body so they come to Moses and ask if it is still ok for them to celebrate. Moses doesn’t try to come up with his own answers for this question, he goes immediately to God in prayer and asks what He wants concerning these people. God’s answer was unexpected by me, He allows them to celebrate whether they are unclean or far from home, all the Israelites are allowed to come before the Lord in celebration at the Passover. Isn’t that wonderful! If I were Moses after going through all those laws and reasons why people can’t come before God it would have seemed obvious that the unclean wouldn’t be included here either. Yet God is so much more merciful than that as He draws the children He leads with His own hand to Himself!

How has God been merciful to you lately when you were maybe afraid to come to Him, or hand wandered from His care?
